Joseph Grealy

I am a statistician currently working in the Civil Service. Right now, I am in the New Hospital Programme team in the Department of Health and Social Care, and previously I was in the air quality team at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. In October 2026, I am due to move to a central uncertainty team in the Department of Transport. Uncertainty has followed me throughout my career - not literally, thankfully. I have had the opportunity to see and influence how uncertainty is quantified, communicated and used to inform real-world decisions. I am particularly interested in Bayesian methods, Gaussian Process emulation, Monte Carlo approaches, and communicating statistics clearly.

I completed my Integrated Master’s in Mathematics and Statistics at Durham University. For my dissertation, I developed a Gaussian Process emulator to analyse uncertainty in hydrological models across UK catchments. I also gained experience through a UKRI research placement on soil uncertainty and an OECD internship on disaster cost estimation in Southeast Asia.

Away from work, I enjoy tinkering - as well as this website, I’ve built a couple of RShiny dashboards and am working on an iOS app (check out my projects page!).

I am interested in pursuing a PhD in the future, with a focus on developing methods for modelling and communicating uncertainty in complex systems, including AI and machine learning applications, particularly where there are implications for health, environment, or policy.
